John Formisano, 52, was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, hindering apprehension or prosecution, official misconduct, and two counts each of child endangerment and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in October following an eight-day trial, DailyVoice reported.
He was sentenced Monday to 79 years in state prison, 65 of which are subject to the No Early Release Act.
The 24-year veteran of the Newark Police Department and former Jefferson Township resident was off-duty when he shot and killed his estranged wife, Christie Formisano, 37, whose body was found on the front porch steps of 5 Mirror Pl. as officers responded to the home around 11:20 p.m. on July 14, 2019.

Another victim, Timothy Simonson, 40, was found shortly after with multiple gunshot wounds, along with two children who were not hurt but may have witnessed the entire tragic ordeal.
In addition to Formisano’s prison time, he was ordered to pay restitution to the New Jersey Victim of Crimes Compensation Office and reimburse the victims’ medical expenses.
He is also banned from having any contact with Simonson and cannot contact the two children or their current guardian.
Assisting investigative agencies include the Jefferson Township Police Department, the Livingston Township Police Department, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit and Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT), and the Major Crimes Unit of the Morris County Prosecutor's Office.
